The purpose of this pack is to provide a useful aid and support mechanism for radiographers starting out in research. The pack has been compiled by a group of experienced research radiographers and focuses on areas fundamental in development. It offers advice on appropriate training and education needs, highlights the importance of the legal requirements required to participate in research and suggests ways of accessing further information.

This document reports on the utilisation of VERT systems in clinical radiotherapy departments across the UK in September 2011, approximately 18 months after the
completion of the initial DH VERT project funded by the Department of Health for England and the Cancer Action Team; and Managed by the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR).

Following the submission of the Scope of Practice report in 2008 the SCoR commissioned the University of Hertfordshire and the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) to undertake exploratory work on the adoption and diffusion of the career progression frame work and to investigate the evidence for impact of introduction of these roles.

The outcome of this work is reported here. The research captured data on issues relating to consultant appointment, impact on service operations and service improvement and hence their immediate impact on clinical imaging services at two National Health Service (NHS) trusts in England.  Based on the outcomes of the study, recommendations are made for a larger study embracing clinical imaging and radiotherapy within the UK as a whole.

In August 2009, the Society of Radiographers (SoR) surveyed members carrying out breast screening in the UK about nominal appointment lengths. Over 200 respondents answered a range of questions in an online questionnaire about how much time they have per client, their workload and the effects of setting nominal appointment lengths.

This document presents an analysis of the results of this survey.

In September 2010, as part of campaign to tackle bullying in the workplace, the Society and College of Radiographers surveyed students in their second, third and (where applicable) fourth years of studying radiography about their experience during clinical placements. Over 300 students responded to an anonymous online questionnaire primarily designed to capture data on the level of bullying on clinical placements. This document presents the results of this survey and the themes of follow-up correspondence with students.

In July 2011, the Society and College of Radiographers surveyed current students and recent graduates from radiography programmes to gather information about their motivations, finances and experiences.

Nearly 500 respondents answered a range of questions in an online questionnaire about the reasons they chose radiography, their finances during and after their degree and their experiences in their first job.

In September 2010, the Society and College of Radiographers surveyed NHS members in Agenda for Change (AfC) pay bands 2 to 4. Over 130 members responded to an online questionnaire covering what will be important to members over the next 2 years, proposed pay awards, planned changes to the NHS and training. In September 2010, the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) surveyed members working in the private and independent healthcare sectors with the aim of improving the knowledgebase of members in these sectors to further improve our services. This guidance aims to help SoR representatives redress the balance between health and safety, service delivery, patient safety and quality of care. Negotiating on working time is a good opportunity for Industrial Relations and Health and Safety Representatives to work together as it is a far reaching issue which encompasses health, safety and welfare at work as well as pay and conditions.

In January 2012, the Society and College of Radiographers surveyed heads of departments delivering imaging and radiotherapy services in the UK about their assistant practitioner (AP) workforce. Nearly 170 respondents answered a range of questions in an online questionnaire. This document presents an analysis of this survey.

In response to recent enquiries, this statement is published to clarify the role of assistant practitioners in the supply, administration and prescribing of medicines (including contrast agents) within imaging and radiotherapy departments.

Body mapping  is a tool that helps to get members talking about the effects of work on their health and enables health and safety representatives to identify clusters of common problems and their causes. It is particularly  useful for identifying musculoskeletal problems which can be fed back to managers along with any solutions identified by members.

Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect at work, but too often this is not the case. If you are being bullied or harassed, or if you are a SoR rep who has encountered this problem in the workplace, it can be difficult to know what to do about it - this guide intends to fill that gap. This society publication has been updated to ensure that both SoR reps and members have a resource that will provide practical information and advice on how to deal with this growing problem, how to stop it and how to prevent it happening in the future.

This Protected Study Time (PST) Charter has been written specifically
for all grades of radiographic professionals working in Scotland and is
in response to the need to re-invigorate the campaign for PST in light
of the legislative requirements from the regulatory body (Health
Professions Council) as stated in article 19,4 of the Health Professions
Order 2001.

This document provides information on  the legal framework as applied to the child including and issues surrounding child consent for imaging and radiotherapy examinations . Other topics included are  non-accidental injury,  immobilisation of
the child and looking after the children of patients whilst they are in the department.

This present document provides advice and guidance to the individual radiographer and recommendations related to education and training. It also outlines the requirement by managers to draw up referral guidelines for Non Accidental Imaging (NAI).

As part of the Recruitment, Retention and Return of Radiographers’ initiatives undertaken by the Society and College of Radiographers, a research project was commissioned to provide information on the capacity and quality of clinical education and training in radiography. This research was carried out by a team from University of Central England in collaboration with Anglia Polytechnic University (now Anglia Ruskin University) and University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust.

The publication of this advice and guidance document is timely given that there has been a significant increase in the numbers of learners within clinical imaging and in radiotherapy and oncology departments. In addition, findings from Clinical Education and Training: Capacity and Quality Project Report (CoR 2004) indicated some concern about the relationships between education providers, placement providers and learners. Everyone involved in the education and training of learners, including the learners themselves, have responsibilities to ensure successful outcomes and this document aims to support all those concerned.

A special edition of Clinical Oncology has been published and is now available to all SCoR members. The new issue, which was produced by the UK Radiotherapy Development Board, is devoted to IMRT delivery in the UK. The document is essential reading for all radiographers working within UK radiotherapy services.

The purpose of this policy paper is to outline for the profession the concept of clinical supervision as part of professional development and life-long learning. Other publications will offer more detail on the subject and give guidance about implementation.

This code replaces the Statements for Professional Conduct published in 2004. It outlines the principles required of a professional working in imaging or radiotherapy. It provides advice and guidance and requires staff to use their professional judgement to apply the principles to the various situations in which they practice and in their personal lives in order to maintain the widest public trust and confidence in the profession.

This document contains information, advice and guidance on the general principles of good practice in seeking consent from patients prior to examinations and treatment undertaken by the radiography workforce in clinical imaging and radiotherapy departments. It has been informed by current available evidence.

SCoR publishes this guidance and advice document to provide additional information to support the development of consultant radiographer posts in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography. There are real opportunities for services and service managers to use the advent of consultant posts to develop and deliver high quality, flexible, patient-oriented, and cost effective services. There is also scope for those within the profession who want to reach the top of clinical practice in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography just as others aspire to the top in management, education and research roles within the profession.

The majority of radiography students experience rewarding academic and clinical placements with supportive teaching teams and clinical educators. Sadly, however, a few students experience bullying and harassment. The Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) believes that bullying and harassment are completely unacceptable in any form.

Radiography students should be treated fairly and consistently, and with dignity and respect, wherever they study or undertake practice placements. Educational institutions and workplaces should be free from undue stress, anxiety or fear of intimidation. Bullying and harassment in the health sector is not tolerated by the SCoR.
