The purpose of this pack is to provide a useful aid and support mechanism for radiographers starting out in research. The pack has been compiled by a group of experienced research radiographers and focuses on areas fundamental in development. It offers advice on appropriate training and education needs, highlights the importance of the legal requirements required to participate in research and suggests ways of accessing further information.

In August 2009, the Society of Radiographers (SoR) surveyed members carrying out breast screening in the UK about nominal appointment lengths. Over 200 respondents answered a range of questions in an online questionnaire about how much time they have per client, their workload and the effects of setting nominal appointment lengths.

This document presents an analysis of the results of this survey.

The Society and College of Radiographers launched its Approval and Accreditation: Policy and Principles document in June 2004. This document follows on from that original document and provides information on the benefits of implementing the Society and College’s Approval and Accreditation Framework. It also provides broad guidance on the implementation of the framework and acts as a source of reference for education providers,  education commissioners, purchasers and sponsors, and _ those acting for the Society and College of Radiographers on approval and accreditation functions.

The Society and College of Radiographers  accredits the professional level
workforce in radiography through validation and approval of both pre- and post- registration education programmes and through accreditation of the individual as they enter membership of the professional body. It now intends to broaden and streamline this work to provide a comprehensive framework within which education, professional development and learning departments may gain professional
body recognition and approval, leading to accreditation of individuals and departments.

Practice educators play a key role in the profession and The Society and College of Radiographers is pleased to launch this scheme for accrediting Practice Educators and sets up a UK register of Practice Educators.

The College of Radiographers is pleased to release the 2008-9 Approval and Accreditation Board (AAB) Report. This is the fifth year of operation of the AAB since its inauguration.

It continues to accomplish a significant amount of progress in the development of policy and overseeing and advising on all aspects of the approval and accreditation of courses and individuals to ensure consistency of approach and standards. The AAB provides a single framework in which all education approval work and accreditation activities are undertaken. The AAB takes its responsibility to maintain high quality radiography provision for the medical imaging and
radiotherapy workforce very seriously and is continually working to raise standards.

This report draws into a single commentary the approval and accreditation activity over the 2008-9 academic year. Its purpose is to provide a national overview of the nature and scope of education provision for the radiography workforce, thus giving a benchmark for institutions (EIs) to use to support self-evaluation and development planning. The report provides comprehensive data and statistical information on the current and future workforce and is recognised as the
most authoritative record of radiography student recruitment, retention and completion in the UK.

This guidance aims to help SoR representatives redress the balance between health and safety, service delivery, patient safety and quality of care. Negotiating on working time is a good opportunity for Industrial Relations and Health and Safety Representatives to work together as it is a far reaching issue which encompasses health, safety and welfare at work as well as pay and conditions.

Body mapping  is a tool that helps to get members talking about the effects of work on their health and enables health and safety representatives to identify clusters of common problems and their causes. It is particularly  useful for identifying musculoskeletal problems which can be fed back to managers along with any solutions identified by members.

Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect at work, but too often this is not the case. If you are being bullied or harassed, or if you are a SoR rep who has encountered this problem in the workplace, it can be difficult to know what to do about it - this guide intends to fill that gap. This society publication has been updated to ensure that both SoR reps and members have a resource that will provide practical information and advice on how to deal with this growing problem, how to stop it and how to prevent it happening in the future.

This Protected Study Time (PST) Charter has been written specifically
for all grades of radiographic professionals working in Scotland and is
in response to the need to re-invigorate the campaign for PST in light
of the legislative requirements from the regulatory body (Health
Professions Council) as stated in article 19,4 of the Health Professions
Order 2001.

This document provides information on  the legal framework as applied to the child including and issues surrounding child consent for imaging and radiotherapy examinations . Other topics included are  non-accidental injury,  immobilisation of
the child and looking after the children of patients whilst they are in the department.

This present document provides advice and guidance to the individual radiographer and recommendations related to education and training. It also outlines the requirement by managers to draw up referral guidelines for Non Accidental Imaging (NAI).

As part of the Recruitment, Retention and Return of Radiographers’ initiatives undertaken by the Society and College of Radiographers, a research project was commissioned to provide information on the capacity and quality of clinical education and training in radiography. This research was carried out by a team from University of Central England in collaboration with Anglia Polytechnic University (now Anglia Ruskin University) and University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust.

The publication of this advice and guidance document is timely given that there has been a significant increase in the numbers of learners within clinical imaging and in radiotherapy and oncology departments. In addition, findings from Clinical Education and Training: Capacity and Quality Project Report (CoR 2004) indicated some concern about the relationships between education providers, placement providers and learners. Everyone involved in the education and training of learners, including the learners themselves, have responsibilities to ensure successful outcomes and this document aims to support all those concerned.

The purpose of this policy paper is to outline for the profession the concept of clinical supervision as part of professional development and life-long learning. Other publications will offer more detail on the subject and give guidance about implementation.

This code replaces the Statements for Professional Conduct published in 2004. It outlines the principles required of a professional working in imaging or radiotherapy. It provides advice and guidance and requires staff to use their professional judgement to apply the principles to the various situations in which they practice and in their personal lives in order to maintain the widest public trust and confidence in the profession.

This document contains information, advice and guidance on the general principles of good practice in seeking consent from patients prior to examinations and treatment undertaken by the radiography workforce in clinical imaging and radiotherapy departments. It has been informed by current available evidence.

SCoR publishes this guidance and advice document to provide additional information to support the development of consultant radiographer posts in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography. There are real opportunities for services and service managers to use the advent of consultant posts to develop and deliver high quality, flexible, patient-oriented, and cost effective services. There is also scope for those within the profession who want to reach the top of clinical practice in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography just as others aspire to the top in management, education and research roles within the profession.

The purpose of this briefing paper is to offer guidance for managers, local Society of Radiographers representatives and emergent radiographer consultants to gain an understanding of the processes involved in the development of consultant radiographer posts, and the purpose and role of these positions.

This document has been drawn up to help National Councils and Regional Committees to ensure that their activities and events meet the SoR’s commitment to the full participation of all its members in a practical and constructive way. It is hoped that the guidelines will be useful in establishing a culture of equality and fairness, and will ensure that our local democracy benefits from the fullest level of participation by all our members.

SCoR is pleased to bring you this further implementation guidance to its Education and Professional Development (EPD) strategy (CoR 2002), and Education and Professional Development: Moving Ahead (CoR 2003). This document recognises that for patients, staff and employers to benefit from the opportunities outlined in the EPD strategy, continual development, growth and embedding of professional skills and culture is a priority. Additionally, the profession must work closely with employers to identify adequate resources to support development opportunities and to ensure that effort and skills are properly rewarded. It also recognises that the strategy cannot be delivered without the support of the profession as a whole.

This education strategy informs and acknowledges the College of Radiographers’ Approval and Accreditation Policy and Procedures (2004) which advises on, acknowledges and accredits best educational and professional development practice, through a rigorous system of external professional peer review. Together, the education strategy and the College’s work on approval
and accreditation assist education funders to make informed choices regarding the education and professional development programmes they commission.  Additionally, education providers may be assured that their education innovations and developments are judged to meet the development needs of the radiography workforce.

The healthcare environment and the health care workforce have seen major reconfiguration in recent years and this change continues apace. This strategy provides guidance for institutions developing educational and professional development initiatives for radiographers, taking the Scottish perspective into account.
